... Located across the Sea of Cortez from and slightly south of
Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan is a constantly growing tourist destination.
The city of Mazatlan has become renown for its white beaches as
well as its ample fishing opportunities. Since its founding in 1820
the city limits of Mazatlan have continually extended. In the twentieth
century the boundaries of Mazatlan have grown to encompass the increasing
number of tourist facilities. As the boundaries of Mazatlan grow
so does its reputation as a tourist destination. The city of Mazatlan
can be divided into three distinct zones. "Old Mazatlan”
includes the port and downtown area. It is located at the southern
end of a peninsula that separates the Pacific from a saltwater estuary.
The second zone in Mazatlan is often called the golden zone or Zona
Dorada. This area, located to the North contains most of the tourist
attractions in Mazatlan. Between Old Mazatlan and the Golden Zone
lies a third area that is primarily undeveloped beach that separates
the port from the resort areas.
Accommodations in Mazatlan
range in both price and extravagance. A room can be rented in Mazatlan
for as little as $60-$120 per night. Hotel accommodations in Mazatlan
range from adequate to luxurious depending on what you desire. When
visiting Mazatlan it is unlikely that you will stay in the room
you have rented. There are great shopping and dining opportunities
throughout Mazatlan. The white stretches of beaches along the coast
still attract numerous tourists to Mazatlan every year.
Since the average temperature
of Mazatlan varies only slightly, there is no wrong time to plan
a vacation in Mazatlan. The average temperature in August and July
is eighty-four degrees Fahrenheit while the cooler months of January
and February have an average temperature of sixty-nine degrees Fahrenheit.
The average annual temperature in Mazatlan is a warm seventy-seven
degrees. Whether you want to relax on the beaches of Mazatlan, shop
downtown or examine the unique architecture of ‘Old’
Mazatlan your Mexican vacation will be a memorable one. Mazatlan
also offers opportunities for Kayaking, Snorkelling, Surfing, Horseback
Riding, Swimming, Cliff Diving, Beach Combing and Volleyball. These
are just a few of the activities you may choose to indulge in during
your stay in Mazatlan. While the city of Mazatlan attracts many
tourists there is also rural areas that attract foreign visitors.
Mazatlan also provides
opportunities for trips to the Sierra Madre Mountains or to the
quieter atmosphere of Isla de la Piedra (Stone Island). The Sierra
Madre Mountains near Mazatlan can be explored through the services
of guides or tour companies. Isla de la Piedra is actually a peninsula
off of Southern Mazatlan. Both Isla de la Piedra and Sierra Madre
Mountains provide an opportunity to get away from the central tourist
attractions of the ‘golden zone’ in Mazatlan. Mazatlan
encompasses both city and rural living in one vacation experience.

or a leisurely visit to the authentic fishing village of Isla de
